Ternopil residents who sold people into sexual slavery in the UAE were fined

Two residents of Ternopil sold women abroad to the UAE for sexual slavery. The court in the human trafficking case punished them with a fine of 119,000 hryvnias each, according to the verdict. The criminal is originally from Rivne with an unfinished higher education, she is not officially employed. Her partner from Ternopil worked as a security guard at the “ATB” supermarket. As the investigation established, together the defendants were looking for girls who are in a difficult financial situation and easily susceptible to persuasion. The thieves also covered the cost of tickets to the UAE. In 2017, they recruited the first victim, offering to go to work in the United Arab Emirates. At that time, the woman’s husband had recently died, leaving behind a small child. She did not have a job and had financial difficulties. On November 3, the Ukrainian woman flew abroad, and upon arrival she learned about the true nature of the work. She had to provide services of a sexual nature. After the first “successful” case, the perpetrators tried to recruit a second woman who was also in a difficult life situation. After several meetings, the Ukrainian woman realized that they were trying to recruit her to work in the sex industry and reported it to the police. At the end of June 2023, the Ternopil City and District Court sentenced two criminals. However, the punishment was allegedly mitigated by the admission of guilt and “sincere remorse of the perpetrators”.
