Deputy Minister Anastasia Bondar took part in the online meeting of the Committee. She presented the list of submitted objects and spoke about the loss of cultural infrastructure due to Russian aggression.

Since the start of the full-scale invasion, Russia has launched more than 10,000 missiles and drones at Ukraine. As a result, more than 1,700 objects of cultural infrastructure and more than 870 monuments of cultural heritage were damaged or destroyed in the country. I believe that together with the UNESCO community we will create a strong circle of support“, said Bondar.

Lina Doroshenko, head of the sector for monitoring the situation in the temporarily occupied territories of the ICIP, explained what the inclusion of new objects in the list would provide: “Currently, 25 objects of cultural heritage of Ukraine enjoy the highest level of protection against military attacks and threats. The decision would increase the security of wartime facilities, potentially allowing competent authorities in all 88 states party to the 1999 Second Protocol to prosecute or extradite alleged offenders“.

Earlier, on September 7, UNESCO added 20 objects of cultural heritage of Ukraine to the International List of Cultural Values under enhanced protection. Among them: Saint Sophia Cathedral and Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra, the ensemble of the historical center of Lviv, the Sofiivka dendrological park, the Kharkiv Derzhprom building, etc.
