Ukrainian director Valentin Vasyanovych (“The Black Level”, “Atlantida”, “Glare”) has started work on a new film. Its release is scheduled for next year. Film producer, co-founder of ForeFilms production company Volodymyr Yatsenko told UP.Kultura about this. “Now we are working on a new film, we have just started. It will be very interesting and, unfortunately, an instructive film about the future of Ukraine. It is called “For Victory”, like a toast. [За сюжетом] Ukraine won this war, but, unfortunately, lost its own society. Because no one wants to change: neither the government, nor society itself. They are not ready to change, not ready to give up corruption, to give up everything negative that is now a part of our lives. Therefore, Europe gradually abandons us, and we become such a swamp in which nothing happens,” Yatsenko said. According to the producer, this film is not fun, “but with a very probable course of events.” “We would really like it to be not so. And perhaps this film will make a number of people think about what should be changed in their own lives, in social life. Understand that we can’t go on like this, because we will lose,” he emphasized. Valentin Vasyanovych and Volodymyr Yatsenko in Venice. The first one shoots the film almost completely, with actors, on a small camera, but in real locations. As a result, we get a movie. And only when he makes sure after editing that the film turned out the way he wants, he will reshoot it in normal quality, with a large crew and so on. This allows filming at a low cost,” said the producer of Vasyanovych’s tapes. Vasyanovych’s tape “For Victory” should be released next year. “There are films that need to be shot now or never. Because, it seems to me, in two years it will no longer be relevant,” Yatsenko is convinced. Valentin Vasyanovych on the set of “Atlantis” He also talked about the fate of Vasyanovych’s previous film “Glare”, which premiered in 2021 at the Venice Film Festival. Then it became the first purely Ukrainian film to be included in the main program of this film review. “Glare” was planned to be released in 2022, but due to the full-scale invasion of Russia, it never reached the big screens. “This pandemic, and then the war – and we thought what to do with it. Most likely, it will be this fall, or the beginning of winter. It will not be a wide rental, most likely. Because this is the kind of film that does not make sense to release in 200 cinemas. It will not be watched by as many people as we would really like. Although it is very interesting from the point of view that Valik, as always, predicts what will happen in the future,” Yatsenko shared. In particular, Vasyanovich’s film “Atlantis”, released in 2019, was called prophetic shortly after its release. It showed the Donbas, completely destroyed by the Russians, which after the victory in 2025 is returned to Ukraine. “We have such a staff joke that we say: “Valik, why did you say about 2025? Maybe [варто було] some time ago.” And he says: “Well, not before, I’m sorry.” It’s the same here. Because the film “Reflection” is about a person who, like many at the beginning of the great war in February, went as a volunteer. And what happened to them after returning is happening,” said the producer, who also joined the ZSU in the spring of 2022. A frame from the film “Glare” According to Yatsenko, for the distribution of “Glare” they will use the experience of another successful launch – the film “Luxembourg, Luxembourg” by Antonio Lukic. “Valik will also travel, these will be screenings with a discussion. And it will not be all the viewers of the world, all the money in the world, but it will be people who really want to go to it. We saw that screenings with the participation of the director or with the participation of the director and actors , they work much better than just a screening. It’s important for people now to talk after the movie, and exchange ideas, and just talk,” he explained. Valentin Vasyanovych is a Ukrainian director, screenwriter and producer. A graduate of the National University of Theater Arts named after Karpenko-Karyo, has a diploma as a director of documentary films. He often acts not only as a director, but also as a cinematographer not only in his own films (“Black Level”, “Atlantis”, “Glare”), but also shot for other directors – for example, Myroslav Slaboshpytsy’s film “Tribe”. Vasyanovych’s films were twice nominated by Ukraine for the Academy Award – “Black Level” (in 2017) and “Atlantis” (in 2019). He is a laureate of the Horizons program and a nominee for the main Golden Lion award of the Venice Film Festival. He was awarded the Shevchenko Prize for the film “Atlantida”.
