On Friday, November 10, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to remove monuments to Russian writer Alexander Pushkin, Bolshevik commander Mykola Shchors, as well as other Russian and Soviet figures from the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Cultural Heritage of National Importance.

This was reported by the Ministry of Culture and Information Policy.

In particular, the following were removed from the register: the monument to Pushkin on Beresteyskyi Avenue, the monument to Shchors on Shevchenko Boulevard, the grave of General Vatutin in Mariinsky Park, the “Zheleznyakov” monitor on St. Electricians, a monument to the crew of the armored train “Taraschanets” in the square between Zaslonova and Yaltynskaya streets in Kyiv.

In addition, the document provides for removing from the register of monuments the monuments to Pushkin in Zhytomyr, Kharkiv and Odesa, Prince Vorontsov in Odesa, General Suvorov in Izmail, Admiral Ushakov in Kherson, “Ukraine – Liberators” in Uzhhorod, Memorial Complex “Fighters of the Revolution ” in Luhansk.

In the summer of 2022, the Verkhovna Rada began the development and adoption of the so-called law on decolonization. It is called the law “On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Toponymy”. The president signed it in April this year.

This document created the legal basis for the removal of Soviet monuments from the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine and their future dismantling.

In December 2022, MKIP calculated that in 8 months in 14 regions of Ukraine, 28 monuments to Pushkin, 9 monuments to Gorky, about 20 monuments and commemorative signs in honor of Soviet liberators, as well as 4 monuments were dismantled in 14 regions of Ukraine Ostrovsky and 4 Suvorov.

However, with some monuments, things did not go as quickly as we would like. So, for example, at the end of October, activists covered the monument to Pushkin in Bagryany Park with an “unmasking” net. Thus, they called on the Cabinet of Ministers to make a decision that would allow the dismantling of monuments to Pushkin and other Russian figures.

And just the other day, the monuments to Pushkin and Shchors in Kyiv were decorated with the inscriptions “Take me down”, “The emperor away” and “Cabinet – remove the status”.

A few days ago, new inscriptions appeared on Shchors
