The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Taras Kremin, considers the decision to ban communication in Russian at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy to be legal. He announced this on January 30 on the air of the “Kyiv” TV channel and on Facebook. Recently, the internal rules of the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy stipulated that teachers, administration and students cannot speak Russian in the institution. Some Ukrainians criticized the institution and called the decision illegal, and the language ombudsman supported the new rule at NaUKMA. “The National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” made a rather powerful initiative, which, I hope, will be relayed to other universities of Ukraine. I support this decision and believe that every university should have the best opportunities for educating truly patriotic, strong-willed, educated citizens of Ukraine,” said Taras Kremin. Another million he gave to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Valery Zaluzhny, as well as to the Ukrainian Catholic University. “As far as I know, one of his wishes is for the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy, which was and is an outpost of high science, to continue to maintain a course both for the affirmation of the Ukrainian language and culture, and our national identity,” the ombudsman said. According to him, the statistics of 2022 show a growing interest in learning the Ukrainian language, particularly in Canada, the USA, and Europe. Kremin appealed to the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Union of Rectors of Higher Education Institutions with a request not to allow violations of the language law in educational institutions. He reminded that the language of the educational process is, by law, the state language, which is stipulated in Article 21 of the Law of Ukraine “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language”. We will remind you that on January 27, the National University “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy” banned everyone from using the Russian language in the institution.
