The Parliament brought closer the completion of the Holodomor Museum

At the meeting of the Verkhovna Rada on February 7, deputies voted in favor of the draft law on amendments to the Law “On Museums and Museum Matters”. It envisages assistance from the Canadian government for the completion and creation of an exposition of the Holodomor-Genocide Museum.

This was reported by a deputy of the Verkhovna Rada Evgenia Kravchuk.
In the first reading, draft law No. 10361 was supported by 230 deputies.
“The law is a prerequisite for the Government of Canada to provide about UAH 420 million for the completion of the Museum, as well as additional financial support from patrons and the diaspora for arranging the exposition. This was made possible thanks to the proactive position of Volodymyr Zelenskyi regarding the Museum of the President of Ukraine in a dialogue with the Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau“, Kravchuk explained.

She also added that after the adoption of the draft law, a supervisory and expert council will appear in the Holodomor Museum. According to the deputy, their composition will include representatives of professional and scientific groups, international organizations of Ukrainians living abroad, and descendants of Holodomor victims.

Completion of the Holodomor-Genocide Museum
In early January 2024, the Verkhovna Rada’s Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy supported the draft law on amendments to the Law “On Museums and Museum Matters” regarding the activities of the National Holodomor-Genocide Museum. Then the Committee recommended adopting the project with a reduction in the deadline for submitting amendments and proposals by half.
Earlier, the museum administration reported that the Government of Canada will allocate about 450 million dollars for the completion of the second phase of the Holodomor Museum.

This was preceded by President Zelenskyi’s decision to veto the draft law allocating UAH 573.9 million for the completion of the Holodomor Museum construction. Later, he explained his position, saying that despite the need to complete the construction of the National Holodomor Genocide Museum, it is not a top priority, and currently the priority task is to protect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
The law “On the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine”, which officially recognizes the Holodomor as genocide, was adopted in 2006, and it provided for the construction of a memorial complex in memory of the victims of the Holodomor. In 2009, the first stage of a large memorial complex in the shape of a candle was opened, which now houses the main exposition.
