A 22-year-old soldier from the Kyiv region suffered three strokes, respiratory arrest and lost an arm after being wounded near Bakhmut.

The story of the soldier Georgy Raskaley was told in the First Medical Association of Lviv.

George was born in Irpen, Kyiv region. The boy joined the army at the age of 19.

George recalls how his mother called him from Irpen and said: “Son, what should I do? We have a tank near the house”.

In addition to my mother, a sister and two younger brothers lived in Irpen, the youngest of whom was only three years old at the time. The family managed to leave Irpen alive.

George continued to serve in the army, but in May 2023 he was seriously wounded near Bakhmut.

An enemy mine hit the dugout where the soldier was. Shrapnel cut the boy’s entire body. He had three brain hemorrhages.

George was given first aid by his brothers, and then he was taken to the stabilization point and the Dnipro hospital. It was there that the boy stopped breathing.

It was impossible to save the right hand, which was most torn by the fragments of the mine, so the medics had to amputate it. His mother, who has been by his side all the time since then, came to Dnipro to visit his severely wounded son.

George regained consciousness in the Kyiv hospital, where he was taken in critical condition. However, doctors gave very little chance of recovery. The guy couldn’t even sit for 20 seconds, let alone walk.

“The doctors told me: what I can throw up in six months will be mine.”

George was sent to the Nezlamni National Center, where surgeons, neurosurgeons and rehabilitation specialists worked with the patient.

“Upon admission, the patient’s condition was difficult. George needed external assistance in moving and serving. He also needed correction of sleep and other physiological processes”, – says Andrii Androsh, George’s doctor.

However, after 2 weeks of rehabilitation, George began to walk independently. According to the doctor, the patient will soon receive a prosthesis and return to a full life.

“My classes start at 8 in the morning and end at 4 in the evening. The doctors told me: what I can throw up in six months will be mine. Because then the neuroplasticity of the brain decreases, that’s why I work for ten.” – says George.
