They didn’t have time to fly to the tropics: white-winged terns got “stuck” in the Tuzlivski Lymani National Park due to a storm

In the national park “Tuzlivski lymany” in Odesa, scientists recorded two dozen white-winged terns (Chlidonias leucopterus), which were unable to fly to Africa due to a storm.
There, the future fate of birds is called “not very optimistic”, because foraging for food (and terns mainly like insects) is now practically impossible.
“All they had to do was sit on the shore and look for a moth thrown by the waves. But now it’s freezing. They circled over the shallow waters for a long time, but the powerful wind just blew them away, and they flew over the Black Sea“, scientists report.
Due to changes in the environment, the number of white-winged terns is decreasing throughout the European range.

“To preserve the species, strict protection of wetlands, cessation of “ameliorative works”, elimination of the disturbance factor from people during the nesting period, and agriculture without the use of pesticides are necessary“, the National Park notes.
They add that the white-winged tern is protected by the Berne and Bonn Conventions, as well as the AEWA Agreement.
