Ukraine is among the 50 countries in the world capable of performing lung transplants – Ministry of Health

Ukraine is included in the list of 50 countries in the world, where doctors, despite the war, carry out one of the most difficult transplants – lung transplantation. This is reported by the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health notes that Ukraine has recently started performing lung transplants. In 2021-2023, doctors conducted such interventions together with Polish colleagues. However, in 2023, Ukrainian doctors have already performed 3 successful lung transplants on their own. Because organ transplants are performed exclusively in developed countries, where the general medical system functions in a coordinated and high-quality way. And, of course, in these there are no large-scale armed conflicts in the states,” says Vasyl Strilka, Director of the Directorate of High-tech Medical Care and Innovations of the Ministry of Health. The Ministry of Health added that in order to carry out a transplant operation, every link must work stably: from the laboratory to the hospital and logistics. Viktor Babii from Lviv became the first patient in Ukraine to receive a lung transplant in September 2021. Already at the beginning of January 2023, transplant specialists of the Lviv St. Panteleimon Hospital performed the first independent lung transplant operation. “The organ was given to a 56-year-old man from Kyiv, a liquidator of the accident at the Chernobyl NPP. He was diagnosed with total bullous emphysema, a disease in which air cysts replace healthy lung tissue. The man’s condition was serious. He could walk no more than 30 meters on his own and was breathing hard. “The donor for the Kyiv resident was a 54-year-old man who died of a stroke. After the doctors diagnosed brain death, his relatives agreed to take the organs,” the Ministry of Health said. The department added that this intervention was carried out without the help of foreign colleagues. The team worked for 16 hours in a row – the operation was successful. In March 2023, the operation was also performed for the first time at the “Feofania” clinic in the Kyiv region. Currently, more than 40 patients are waiting for a lung transplant in Ukraine. All operations are free of charge for patients and are fully covered by the Ministry of Health. We will remind you that in May 2023, doctors in Lviv performed a unique transplant. They transplanted organs posthumously to four patients. Read also: More than 50 bone marrow transplants from a non-family donor were performed in Ukraine: how to become one of them
