Near the scientific station “Akademik Vernadskyi” the snow cover has changed its color. Polar scientists explained that this phenomenon is caused by microscopic green unicellular algae. This unicellular plant has three color stages. It winters under the snow in the “green” version. It is dominated by chlorophyll, i.e. green enzyme. As a result, more and more bright algae develop in it, which accelerates the melting even more. Therefore, it is important to record the area of ”blooming snow” on experimental surfaces every year in order to see the general trends of the impact of climate change,” – explain the scientists at Vernadsky.
