In the Chinese province of Jiangsu, law enforcement officers intercepted a truck with about a thousand cats that were being taken to slaughter.
The meat of the animals was planned to be sold as pork or lamb, reports CNN.
The day before, local zoo activists noticed a large number of wooden cages with cats near one of the cemeteries.
Volunteers watched them for six days, and when the animals were loaded into a car, they contacted the police.

Suspects of illegal animal trade were caught. All animals were transferred to the shelter.
According to law enforcement officers, the cats were taken to the southern regions of the country.
As activists note, this is not the first case of rescuing homeless animals.
Half a kilogram of cat meat is sold for about $4 (almost UAH 150), said one of the zoo volunteers.
Earlier we reported that two people were detained in Kyiv for cruel treatment of rare animals.
