We waited 95 years: the image of Mickey Mouse will become the public domain of the United States

The image of Mickey Mouse from Disney’s Steamboat Willie will enter the public domain on January 1 of next year.
Early next year marks the 96th anniversary of the character’s first appearance on the big screen, according to the Center for Public Domain Research at Duke Law School.
For the first time on the big screen, the character debuted in 1928.
It is noted that under US law, copyright on a product can last for 95 years.

Since January 1, works with Mickey Mouse, which will be 96 years old, as well as sound recordings, which will be more than 100 years old since their creation, will become the public domain of the United States.
The status allows anyone to republish, make analogues and adapt works without the permission of the rights holder.

The Research Center added that the expiration of the copyright for the cartoon “Steamboat Willie” will not affect the modern versions of Mickey, meaning that the mouse in the main role will continue to play a representative of the Walt Disney Company.
It is noted that next year the character of the cartoon “Pooh’s House on the Corner” Tigrul will also become public property of the USA, as well as:
- David Herbert Lawrence’s novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover”;
- the novel “On the Western Front Without Changes” by Erich Maria Remarque;
- tape “The Operator” by Buster Keaton.
